This savory bake features caramelized onions, seasoned ground beef, and melted cheese wrapped in flaky crescent dough. A comforting, all-in-one dinner with French onion-inspired flavor.
1 lb ground beef
2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
2 tbsp butter
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 tsp dried thyme or 1 tsp fresh thyme
1/3 cup beef broth
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
2 cans refrigerated crescent roll dough
1 egg + 1 tbsp water (egg wash)
Fresh parsley or fried onions for garnish (optional)
Preheat oven to 375°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
In a large skillet, melt butter and add sliced onions. Cook over medium-low for 20–25 minutes, stirring often, until caramelized.
Add ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned. Drain excess fat.
Stir in garlic, thyme, broth, and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer 5 minutes.
Remove from heat and mix in half the shredded cheese.
Press one can of crescent dough into the baking dish to form a bottom crust.
Spread beef filling over dough, then top with remaining cheese.
Cover with second can of dough. Press edges to seal and brush with egg wash.
Bake 22–25 minutes or until golden. Let rest before serving.
