A comforting Irish classic combining creamy mashed potatoes with a savory meat and vegetable filling, perfect for family dinners.

Ingredients

1 ½ pounds potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
4 tablespoons butter
½ cup heavy cream
Salt and black pepper, to taste
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 pound ground beef or lamb
1 medium onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 medium carrots, diced
½ cup peas
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon fresh parsley, chopped
½ teaspoon nutmeg
½ cup beef or vegetable stock

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Boil potatoes until tender. Mash with butter, cream, salt, pepper, and nutmeg.

  • Sauté onions and garlic in olive oil until fragrant. Add meat and cook until browned.

  • Add carrots, peas, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and stock. Simmer until thickened. Season with thyme, parsley, salt, and pepper.

  • Spread filling in a baking dish. Top with mashed potatoes, smoothing and creating peaks.

  • Bake 20–25 minutes until golden and crisp.

  • Rest 5–10 minutes before serving.

  • Serve hot; store leftovers in refrigerator up to 3 days.
